An adult was critically injured in a MVC at the intersection of Green Pond Hwy. (SC Hwy 303) and Rivers Street, Tuesday morning 16-June at 07:47. Details of the event leading up to the MVC are unknown; however, a witness alledged a White SUV pulled in front of the northbound Chev. Silverado pickup truck. The pickup truck attempted to avoid the collision and slid sideways on the wet pavement, crossed a grass median and struck a large pine tree in the driver's door. The SC CEM certification requires extensive documentation of the applicant's qualifications, experience and training. In addition to references, experience in both full-scale exercises or real world events, the SC CEM requires more than 100 contact hours of training (within the last 10 years) directly applicable to the four phases of emergency management - mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. Applications are peer-reviewed and certifications are issued by the South Carolina Emergency Management Association.
A severe weather event dropped heavy rain and high winds on the south end of the county Saturday evening 13-June, beginning at 19:34. There were multiple reports of trees down, blocked roads and downed power lines south of Walterboro to Green Pond. The area received a good bit of rain which caused slight flooding in some areas. Fire-Rescue units, Coastal Electric and Dominion Energy crews responded to many downed electrical lines and a large tree in the 500 block of Bowman Lane fell on a house. A pedestrian was killed when they were struck by a pickup truck in the 2000 block of ACE Basin Parkway (US Hwy 17) just south of Wiggins Road Saturday morning 13-June at 04:34. The victium was wearing all black clothing and walking in the southbound lane of the highway. The rural section of the highway has no street lighting and the area was dark. A south bound Toyota pickup truck did not see the person and struck them in the travel lanes. The victim suffered multiple traumatic injuries. Click here for additional information.
An adult was critically injured when the moped crossed into the path of an east bound Ford Explorer Friday afternoon 12-June at 18:02. The accident occurred at the intersection of Hampton Street and Hickory Street. The Explorer was traveling west on Hampton Street when the moped pulled out from Hickory Street striking the Explorer head-on. The small moped received extensive damage and ejected the driver who landed unconscious in the roadway. The driver was not wearing a helmet. Click here for additional information.
At 14:25 11-June, 9-1-1 was notified of a second structure fire across from 1910 Van Dyke Road near Cottageville. Some units were released from the structure fire on Augusta Hwy to respond to the location. The caller responded the building was abandoned. Engine 9 arrived to find the single story, approx. 2000 sq. ft block structure fully involved. The roof had already collapsed and the woods around the building were also on fire. An Augusta Hwy. (SC Hwy 61) home was destroyed in a mid-day fire Thursday 11-June. At 11:27 a passing motorist reported to 9-1-1 that the porch of a house was on fire at 17446 Augusta Hwy. A second caller reported the house was well involved. Engine 19 arrived to the rural community about 10 minutes later to find the two story residence approximately 60% involved with flames coming from the windows and doors on both floors. Four people were injured when a semi-truck and a Tahoe collided near the 59 mile marker southbound Monday morning 08-June at 07:15. The two front occupants of the Tahoe were trapped in the wreckage and an pediatric in the back seat suffered multiple non-life threatening injuries. The pediatric was able to exit the vehicle. The truck driver also complained of non-life threatening injuries. First arriving units requested a second Fire-Rescue ambulance to respond. An adult driver was injured in a single vehicle high speed MVC in the 5300 block of Charleston Hwy (SC Hwy 64) Sunday morning 07-June at 10:04. The westbound Buick Enclave failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway. The car struck a driveway culvert and became airborne. The car struck a power pole breaking it in half before flipping over. The small car landed upright on the westbound shoulder. The restrained driver was able to exit the vehicle on thier own.
