02/April/2024 - MVC with Double Entrapment & Air Evac - "B" Shift

Incident # 24-02562 - Two people were critically injured and heavily entrapped in a single vehicle MVC in the 400 block of Wood Road Tuesday afternoon 02-April at 18:38. The east bound Crown Victoria was traveling at a high rate of speed, when if crossed into the west bound lane, entered the ditch and struck a driveway culvert. The car became airborne and struck a large oak tree several feet off the ground, causing extensive damage to the car. The floor and dashboard were pushed into the seats. Both occupants were trapped in the wreckage and suffered multiple life threatening injuries. Engine 6 and Medic 6 arrived minutes later and requested one additional Fire-Rescue Ambulance, a Rescue Unit and a medical helicopter. Firefighter-Paramedics began treating the patients in the car, while other crew members used Holmatro Rescue tools to extricate the passenger. She was moved to Medic 6 and transported to a nearby field to meet with CARE Flight. The patient was transferred to the Flight crew, then flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. Crews continued working to free the driver. They removed the driver side doors and cut the supports to the seats. A hydraulic spreader was used to displace a portion of the dashboard to free the driver. He was extricated with spinal precautions, received further treatment at the scene, then was transported emergent to the Trauma Center at MUSC with two additional Firefighter-Paramedics onboard to assist with his care. Wood Road was blocked for over an hour due to the accident. Traffic through the Green Pond Community was already detoured to Wood Rd due to construction on the railroad tracks at Green Pond Hwy and Bennetts Point Road. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the collision. 
Engine 6, Medic 1, Medic 6, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 107, Car 111 and Car 114 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
