10/April/2024 - Structure Fire - "A" Shift

Incident # 24-02791 - A Hickory Hill residence was heavily damaged in an afternoon fire that occurred in the 900 block of Hickory Hill Road, about 5 miles south of the Green Pond Community. Neighbors saw flames on the front porch and called 9-1-1 at 15:04. A four year canine was trapped inside the home. Neighbors made attempts to rescue the trapped dog. Fire-Rescue units arrived minutes later to find heavy flames coming from the front of the doublewide mobile home. The front porch was well involved and fire had spread into several front rooms. Crews deployed multiple handlines to the building to knock down the flames. Firefighter-Paramedics entered the burning building to search for the dog and located the unconscious animal in a bathroom. He was rescued and brought out to one of the ambulances on the scene. Firefighter-Paramedics and Animal Services Officers treated the dog. Oxygen was administered with the use of special masks from the "Fido Kits" carried on all Colleton County Fire-Rescue Ambulances. The specially designed masks fit over the dogs snout to safely and adequately administer oxygen during times of emergencies. After about 10 minutes of treatment, the dog began to move and his breathing improved. He was not able to stand on his own. Animal Services was preparing to transport him to a local veterinarian, but family members decided to transport him to an animal emergency clinic in Summerville. It was reported that the dog was released in stable condition later that evening. The mobile home had been renovated in the past with double flooring and a metal roof installed over an older shingle roof. These additions hampered the extinguishment effort as the fire spread under the floor and across the attic space. Firefighter-Paramedics used circular saws, chainsaws and axes to reach the advancing fire as they had to remove portions of the floor, ceiling and roof. Units were on the scene for over five hours.Water supply was conducted using Tenders. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
