17/December/2023 - Nor'easter

Edisto Beach suffered flooding from the nor'easter storm that ran up the SC coast Sunday, causing damage from Edisto Island to the North Carolina line. Palmetto Blvd, SC Hwy 174, Yacht Club Road, as well as the Wyndham Complex received high water, blocking access to the roads and the resort. The Causeway to the Island and several roads were closed due to the high water. Charleston harbor recorded its 4th highest tide on record at 9.86 feet. For the more curious folks, the rankings are
1. Hurricane Hugo (1989) at 12.52 Feet,
2. 1940 SC Hurricane at 10.23 feet
3. Hurricane Irma (2017) at 9.92 feet
4. Nor'easter (December 17, 2023) at 9.86 feet
5. Hurricane Matthew (2016) at 9.29 feet.
Another fun fact the Nor'easter replaced the previous non-tropical system record of 8.81 feet that was recorded on 1-Jan-1987. Lowcountry Regional Airport (KRBW) recoreded 2.96 inches of rain and a 33 MPH gust, Botany Bay Weather Station on Edisto Island recorded 2.89 inches of rain and a 34 MPH gust, and Edisto Buoy 41004 - 41 nautical miles southeast of Charleston recorded a 64 MPH wind speed and waves of 27 to 29 feet. Monday, DOT Crews and Town Officials were once again clearing sand from Palmetto Blvd and assessing damage to homes. Most roads had reopened by Monday. Fire-Rescue's Emergency Management Division was at the Beach Monday morning to assist the Town.
