05/December/2023 - Evacuation Zone Changes

Deputy Chief Dr. David Greene  made a presentation to the County Council regarding the upcoming changes to the County's Hurricane Evacuation Zones. The County previously had two evacuation zones which presented problems when neighboring counties had to perform evacuations. It was decided to create a third zone to improve the evacuation process. Greene explained that Edisto Beach and now the Bennetts Point Area south of the Ashepoo River will be in Zone "A" (RED). Edisto Island, Bennetts Point and the surrounding islands have similar effects from hurricanes due to the proximity with the Atlantic Ocean. Areas south of the CSX Railroad and north of the Ashepoo River will be in Zone "B" (Yellow) and areas south of Hendersonville Hwy/ Cottageville Hwy (US Hwy 17-A) and north of the CSX Railroad will be in Zone "C" (Green). Most are in low lying areas are prone to flooding during hurricanes. He advised Fire-Rescue would be informing the public through several means beginning in the first part of 2024. Persons living in the affected areas would receive notification through the mail as well. Fire-Rescue planned on erecting signs are various points. A display and video presentation was presented at the Council meeting. The changes will be in effect before the start of the 2024 Hurricane Season which begins on 01-June.
