03/September/2023 - MVC with Entrapment and Air Evac - "C" Shift

Incident # 23-06726 - At 19:16, Sunday afternoon 03-September a northbound passenger car left I-95 at a high rate of speed. The car entered the wooded median, struck a tree and overturned, trapping the driver in the wreckage. The car suffered heavy damage. Several passing motorists stopped to assist, but could not access the patient. When Fire-Rescue units arrived, they found the vehicle laying on its passenger side covered with foliage. A Firefighter-Paramedic was able to enter the car through the broken rear window and begin providing patient care. She was able to control the man's bleeding, while other crew members stabilized the car and began extricating the patient. Foliage had to be removed from around the vehicle, then Firefighters used Holmatro Pentheon Rescue Tools to remove a portion of the roof to free the man. He was extricated with full spinal precautions. Due to his altered level of consciousness and traumatic injuries, a medical helicopter was requested. CARE Flight responded and landed on I-95 north of the accident. The patient was transferred to the Flight Crew and he was flown to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the MVC.
Engine 26, Medic 26, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 110 and Car 111 responded. Captain Mike Duffy served as incident Commander.
