16/April/2023 - High Speed Fatal MVC - "C" Shift

Incident # 23-02744 - A Florida man was killed and four other people were injured, in a high speed, two vehicle MVC on I-95 near the 45 mile marker southbound, Sunday morning 16-April at 01:38. The accident occurred at the Combahee Rd overpass and blocked both southbound lanes. It appeared a southbound Chevrolet Malibu veered off of the highway and struck a guardrail disabling the small car on the dark stretch of rural interstate. The driver exited the car. A  southbound Jeep approached and attempted to avoid the black Malibu which was in the travel lane, but the cars collided and the Malibu driver was also hit by the Jeep. The Jeep then overturned in the roadway. Both vehicles received heavy damage. The Malibu driver suffered multiple traumatic injuries. A young couple and a newborn baby were in the Jeep, but were able to exit the vehicle through the rear lift gate. A passenger in the Malibu received non-life threatening injuries. Fire-Rescue units had just cleared up from another response on Lowcountry Hwy and arrived quickly. Two additional Fire-Rescue ambulances were assigned to the incident. The driver of the Malibu had no signs for life. The other four patients were treated at the scene by Firefighter-Paramedics. Fire-Rescue Medic 13 transported the passenger of the Malibu to Colleton Medical Center. Medic 1 transported the family of three to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center after they were diverted by Colleton Medical Center. Both southbound lanes were blocked for two hours causing traffic to back up for several miles. The accident is being investigated by the SC Highway Patrol. 

Engine 1, Medic 1, Medic 13, Medic 26, Battalion 1, Rescue 1, Car 111 and Car 118 responded.
