10/April/2023 - Structure Fire - "A" Shift

Incident # 23-02583 - An alert PRTC employee and neighbor saved a Cottageville home and the resident's dog Monday morning 10-April. At 10:44 PRTC employee Adam Spooner was making an installation in the 5900 block of Peirce Rd. He and the neighbor heard the smoke alarms sounding at the residence next door. The neighbor was aware the occupant was not at home. Both went to investigate and found smoke coming from the doublewide mobile home. A canine was in the smoke-filled home, so Spooner forced the front door of home and the K9 quickly exited. The dog was not injured. Fire-Rescue units arrived minutes later and deployed one handline to the building. Crews entered the home and found a chair in the den burning. Firefighter-Paramedics carried the burning chair outside, where they used the handline to extinguish the fire. Fire damage inside the home was minimal, but there was smoke damage throughout the residence. Crews were on the scene for about one hour clearing the smoke from the home. The fire was possibly started from a cigarette. Residents are reminded that smoke detectors provide early warning to fires and in this case alerted people next door. Fire-Rescue provides and installs free smoke alarms to residents in the County Fire District at no charge. Any interested county residents can call Fire-Rescue Headquarters at (843) 539-1960.

Engine 9, Engine 36, Tender 5, Tender 9, Tender 19, Tender 27, Tender 34, Battalion 1 and Car 112 responded. Captain Ethan Shieder served as Incident Commander.
