30/March/2023 - Fatal MVC - "B" Shift

Incident # 23-02297 - A Virginia man died in a single vehicle high speed MVC on I-95 at Exit 57 South bound Thursday afternoon 30-March at 12:40. The south bound Hyundai left the roadway, struck the cable barrier and returned to the roadway, the car returned to the median, drove through the cable barrier and struck a tree, then became tangled in the cables. The car caught on fire in the engine compartment. Several other motorists stopped to assist. They were able to force open the doors and remove an adult female passenger. The unconscious male driver was pulled from the burning car and taken several hundred feet away from the car. The man had no pulse. Bystanders began performing CPR on the man while in the median of the Interstate. Fire-Rescue units arrived minutes later and Firefighter-Paramedics took over patient care. The man was quickly transported to Colleton Medical Center, where the ED staff worked to revive him for over thirty minutes. He did not survive. The female passenger was also transported to the Colleton Medical Center by Fire-Rescue. She received non-life threatening injuries. Firefighters deployed one handline from Engine 26 to extinguish the fire. The car received heavy damage from the collision and the fire. I-95 at Exit 57 was down to one lane for about 1-1/2 hours. According to witnesses, the man may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. 

Engine 26, Medic 9, Medic 19, Medic 26, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 105, Car 112, Car 116 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
