20/March/2023 - High Speed MVC with ejection & Air Evac - "A" Shift

Incident # 23-02018 - A Charleston man was critically injured in a single vehicle, high speed MVC in the 12000 block of ACE Basin Parkway (US Hwy 17) north of Balchem Lane Monday evening, 20-March at 20:05. The southbound Honda CR-V struck the guard rail in a curve causing the driver to lose control of the small car. The vehicle flipped over multiple times, ejecting the unrestrained driver. The car crossed back over both southbound lanes, the median and both northbound lanes before landing on its roof in a swamp. The driver was thrown onto the asphalt cross-over in the median. Firefighter-Paramedics found the man unconscious laying face down in the roadway. He suffered multiple traumatic injuries and a head injury. A medical helicopter was requested as crews began treating the man's injuries. He was transported from the scene to a nearby field to meet with the CARE Flight helicopter. Crews performed advanced airway techniques to secure his airway. He was flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. Fire units were on the scene for four hours assisting the Highway Patrol with lighting and traffic control while they conducted their investigation. 

Engine 6, Medic 6, Medic 13, Battalion 1, Car 107 and Car111 responded. Battalion Chief Scott O'Quinn served as Incident Commander.
