30-March-2022 - Structure Fire - "C" Shift

Incident # 22-02360 - At 12:18, 30-March, Fire-Rescue and the City of Walterboro Fire Dept were sent to the area of Acorn Road and Sniders Hwy for a structure fire. Initial calls indicated the fire was at the old Palms Inn Motel which is in the City. The first arriving WFD unit arrived and verified the incident was at 97 Acron St behind the motel in the County. Fire-Rescue was dispatched to the location and arrived a short time later. Engine 26 noted the block auto repair shop had heavy smoke visible and fire coming from the roof. Walterboro Engine 2 advised of a large woods and debris fire was behind the business. Engine 26 deployed multiple handlines to the building, while WFD Engine 2 deployed an 1-3/4 handline from the motel parking lot to combat the fire behind the building. WFD Ladder 1 set up behind the motel but was not needed. Firefighters from both departments worked for about 25 minutes to bring the fire under control. The building suffered substantial damage. The fire appeared to have burned from an unattended burn barrel behind the business, which set a large pile of debris on fire. The high winds Wednesday spread the fire to the building which extended into the offices and the roof. Crews were on the scene for two and half hours. No injuries were reported.
