10/March/2022 - Fatal MVC with Entrapment - "A" Shift

Incident # 22-01859 - Three people were injured, one fatally, in a two vehicle accident on I-95 near the 68 mile marker SB, Thursday morning 10-March at 10:35. Both vehicles, a Chev. Suburban and a Jeep were traveling southbound when they collided and drove off of the right hand shoulder, crossed a water filled ditch and struck several trees. The Suburban received heavy front end damage and trapped the driver in the wreckage. The Suburban was carrying a full load in the rear and the items were propelled forward into the front passenger section. All occupants in both vehicles were wearing seatbelts. The two adults in the Jeep were able to exit the vehicle. They received non life threatening injuries. Other motorists stopped to assist. They could not get the Suburban driver out of his SUV. Firefighter-Paramedics evaluated the patients at the scene. The Suburban driver, from Virginia, had no signs of life. The occupants of the Jeep were transported to Colleton Medical Center in Fire-Rescue Medic 7. Once the Coroner's Office completed their investigation, Firefighter-Paramedics used Holmatro Rescue Tools to extricate the driver of the Suburban.  He was transported by the Coroner's Office. Southbound traffic was down to one lane for over an hour and backed up for several miles. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. 

Engine 5, Engine 26, Rescue 1, Medic 7, Medic 26, Car 105 and Car 112 responded. Deputy Chief David Greene served as Incident Commander.
