05/December/2021 - High Speed MVC with Ejection - "B" Shift

Incident # 21-08729 - An adult male suffered critical injuries after being ejected from a pickup truck on Interstate 95 near the 53 mile marker southbound Sunday evening 05-December at 17:30. Fire-Rescue units were already enroute to a fatal MVC at the 48 mile marker northbound. Some units were reassigned to the second MVC at the 53 mile marker. A witness advised a southbound pickup truck pulling a trailer swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle that changed lanes in front of him. The pickup truck entered the grass median and flipped over multiple times. The unrestrained adult male driver was ejected from the truck and was found unconscious approx. 25 feet south of where the truck came to rest. Another adult male who was a passenger and wearing a seat belt was not injured and was found walking around the scene. Firefighter-Paramedics treated the critically injured man at the scene. A medical helicopter that was enroute to the first MVC was diverted to this accident. The second helicopter had an extended ETA, so two additional Firefighter-Paramedics were placed in Medic 26 and the patient was transported emergent in Fire-Rescue Medic 26 to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston. The man remained unconscious during the transport. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Engine 26, Medic 26, Car 112 and Car 116 responded. Captain Janet Laney served as Incident Commander.
