11/December/2020 - Fatal MVC with Ejection, Entrapment & Air Evac - "C" Shift

Incident # 20-08516 - A high speed, single car MVC resulted in the death of an adult female and critically injured the male driver Friday morning 11-December at 10:43. The south bound Infiniti left the roadway on a straight portion of I-95, entered the median and struck a large tree causing substantial damage to the car. Neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt. The male driver was ejected from the car and found near the front passenger's side of the vehicle. He was semi-conscious and suffered multiple traumatic injuries. The female passenger also received multiple injuries and was trapped in the wreckage. She had no signs of life. Several off duty out of state first responders stopped and cared for the driver prior to arrival of Fire-Rescue units. Firefighter-Paramedics treated the man's injuries and requested the C.A.R.E. Flight helicopter, who responded and landed on the Interstate. The patient was transferred to the Flight Crew, then flown to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston. The Coroner was requested for the female passenger. Once their investigation was complete, Firefighters used Holmatro Rescue Tools to extricate the woman. She was transported by the Coroner's Office. South bound I-95 was blocked for about 45 minutes and down to one lane for several hours. Traffic backed up for over 5 miles. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the MVC and their MAIT Team also responded.
