09/August/2020 – Fatal MVC with entrapment – “B” Shift

Incident # 20-05463 – An Islandton man was killed and a Smoaks man was injured in a two vehicle MVC at the intersection of Ruffin Rd and Jones Swamp Rd Sunday evening 09-August. At 21:22, Fire-Rescue units were dispatched to the accident. Engine 26 and Medic 26 arrived 3 minutes later to find one SUV over-turned and one car in the front yard of a residence in the 600 block of Ruffin Road. Firefighter-Paramedics found the driver of the SUV trapped in the wreckage and deceased with multiple traumatic injuries. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. Crews requested one additional ambulance and a Rescue unit. Crews stabilized the over-turned SUV and used Holmatro Rescue Tools and a reciprocating saw to remove a portion of the roof to access the patient. He was turned over the Coroner’s Office. The driver of the car received facial injuries and was transported by Fire-Rescue Medic 26 to Colleton Medical Center. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Engine 26, Medic 1, Medic 26, Rescue 1, Battalion1, Car 110 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
