18/November/2018 – MVC with entrapment – “B” Shift

Incident # 18-08041 – Five people were injured in a two car collision at the intersection of August Hwy (SC Hwy 61) and Peirce Road Sunday evening 18-November at 18:19. The collision resulted in a Lexus sliding down an embankment on the northbound side of the highway and a Chevrolet Avalanche sliding down an embankment on the southbound side of the road. Both vehicles also struck trees. The front seat passenger of the Avalanche was trapped in the wreckage. Due to the number of the people injured, three additional Fire-Rescue Ambulances were sent to the scene to assist Medic 9. A second accident at the intersection of Augusta Hwy and Red Oak Road was dispatched three minutes later. One ambulance (Medic 19) was tied up on that accident and transported several people to Colleton Medical Center. At the Peirce Road MVC, Firefighter-Paramedics treated the five injured patients. Four were transported by Medics 1 and 26 to Colleton Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Other crewmembers treated the woman in the Avalanche while personnel used Holmatro Rescue Tools to extricate her. The patient was placed in a KED while two hydraulic cutters were used to cut the A, B, and C posts on both sides of the vehicle. The roof was removed and the patient was extricated on to a long spine board, then carried up the embankment to Medic 9. The woman was transported to Colleton Medical Center. Traffic on Augusta Hwy was completely blocked for two hours while the emergency crews worked and the SC Highway Patrol conducted their investigation.

Engine 9, Engine 19, Engine 36, Rescue 1, Medic 1, Medic 7, Medic 9, Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 112 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
