05/September/2017 – Apparatus MVC – “A” Shift

Incident # 17-06161 – Two Firefighter-Paramedics and two civilians were injured after a large moving van struck the rear of Medic 13 and then overturned on I-95 near the 51 mile marker southbound. The accident occurred Tuesday afternoon 05-September at 14:01. Engine 1 and Medic 13 had responded to a MVC at the same location. A thunderstorm was passing through the area bringing heavy rains. The Engine and Medic pulled into the breakdown lane when the moving van lost control and collided with the ambulance. The force of the impact pushed the ambulance into the ditch near the wood line and the moving van overturned on the right shoulder. Both vehicles suffered heavy damage. Engine 1 reported the accident over the radio and requested two additional ambulances. The two injured crewmembers from Medic 13 were able to exit their vehicle and despite their injures went to check on the two injured civilians in the moving van. Southbound traffic on I-95 was down to one lane and quickly backed up for four miles. The person in the original accident was not injured. The SC Highway Patrol and State Transport Police are investigating the crash. Medic 13 was totaled in the collision. The two Firefighter-Paramedics and the two civilians were transported to Colleton Medical Center by Medic 19 and Medic 26. Fortunately none suffered any life threatening injuries, but both crewmembers will be out for an extended period.

Engine 1, Medic 19, Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 105, Car 112, Car 110 and Car 118 responded. Firefighter-Paramedic Kristin Dias served as Incident Commander.
