18/February/2016 – Fatal MVC – “C” Shift

Incident # 16-00947 – A 60 year old Ruffin man died from injuries received in a two vehicle accident in front of S&G Grocery located at 14201 Bells Hwy at Cross Swamp Road Thursday evening 18-February. At 18:16, Fire-Rescue was notified of the accident. Medic 18, stationed 2-1/2 miles away arrived within four minutes to find the driver of a Vulcan motorcycle lying on the ground with multiple traumatic injuries. The patient was in critical condition. Firefighter-Paramedics began treating the man and requested a medical helicopter to respond. A helicopter was not immediately available, so the patient was rapidly transported to Colleton Medical Center with two additional Firefighter-Paramedics assisting with care. The patient went into cardiac arrest during the transport to CMC and did not survive his injuries. A second Fire-Rescue Ambulance responded to evaluate the driver of the car. He did not require transportation to the hospital. The motorcycle was traveling east bound on Bells Highway (SC Hwy 64) when it collided with the front of a west bound 2010 Ford Fusion that appeared to be turning into the Grocery Store. Traffic on Bells Highway was down to one lane for 3-1/2 hours while State Troopers investigated the accident.

Engine 23, Medic 18, Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 109 and Car 118 responded. Captain Doug Mixson served as Incident Commander.
