09/July/2015 – Mutual Aid - Fatal MVC w/entrapment – “A” Shift

Incident # 15-03861 - Two Colleton County residents were killed and a Walterboro man injured, in a three car collision on US Hwy 17-A near the Colleton-Dorchester County line, Thursday morning 09-July. Colleton County Fire-Rescue and Sheriff’s Deputies responded after Dorchester County requested assistance with the incident. The accident occurred around 10:15 on US Hwy 17-A approximately 1 mile east of the Edisto River. A west bound Ford Sport Trac and an east bound Ford Explorer collided head-on. An eastbound Toyota Pickup truck, who had been travelling behind the Explorer, collided with the rear of the Explorer. The 61 year old male driver of the Sport Trac and the 59 year old female driver of the Explorer were heavily entrapped in the wreckage and died from multiple traumatic injuries. Following the crash, the Explorer over-turned in a ditch. The accident blocked the entire highway. Paramedics from Dorchester EMS Medic 7 began treating the patients. Firefighter-Paramedics with Colleton Medic 9 treated and transported the 55 year old male driver of the Toyota to Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. The roadway remained blocked for over 2-1/2 hours while Law Enforcement and the Dorchester County Coroner’s Office conducted their investigations. Once completed, Dorchester County Firefighters used Holmatro rescue tools to extricate the drivers from both vehicles. The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office transported both patients. Dorchester and Colleton County Sheriff’s Deputies rerouted traffic off of US Hwy 17-A for three hours until the accident was cleared.

 

Dorchester County Fire-Rescue Engine 8, Engine 30, Dorchester EMS Medic 7, Colleton County Fire-Rescue Engine 9, Medic 9, Battalion 1 and Car 109 responded.
