03/March/2013 – Fatal MVC with entrapment – “B” Shift

Incident # 15-01171 – One person died and three others were injured in a three vehicle accident on Augusta Highway (SC Hwy 61) at the Colleton-Dorchester County Line Tuesday morning 03-March. At 08:08, Fire-Rescue was notified by Dorchester County of the accident east of Peirce Road. Initial information noted one adult was trapped, two other adults and a child were injured. Off-duty Captain/Paramedic  Bryon Eadon drove up on the accident as it was being dispatched. He began rendering aid to the injured and advised the trapped person had no signs of life. The accident completely blocked the two lane rural highway. It appeared a full sized pickup truck and a mini-van collided head-on on a bridge. A flatbed wrecker then collided with the back of the mini-van. No one in the pickup truck or the wrecker were injured. Colleton Fire-Rescue sent two ambulances and Dorchester County dispatched an Engine and Ambulance. Colleton units were able to access the west side of the accident site and Dorchester the east side. Dorchester EMS transported an adult and the child to MUSC in Charleston, while Medic 9 transported an adult patient to Colleton Medical Center. Firefighter-Paramedics stood by until the Coroner’s Office completed their investigation, then used Holmatro Rescue Tools to extricate the male driver.

He was transported by the Coroner’s Office. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. The highway was blocked for over three hours. SCDOT erected a detour.

Engine 5, Engine 9, Engine 36, Medic 9, Medic 19, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 105, Car 107, Car 111 and Car 118 responded. Captain Bryon Eadon served as Incident Commander.
