15/February/2015 – Fatal MVC with entrapment – “C” Shift

Incident # 15-00851 – A 67 year old North Carolina man died from multiple traumatic injuries following a high speed crash on I-95 near the 55 mile marker northbound, Sunday morning 15-February. The accident was reported at 02:53, after a motorist reported hitting debris in the highway and noticing something red in the medium. Fire-Rescue units arrived minutes later to find the 2001 Dodge pick-up truck on the left shoulder with massive damage. It appeared the car drifted off of the left shoulder, entered the median and struck several large trees. The driver was wearing a seatbelt. Firefighter-Paramedics found the driver heavily entrapped in the wreckage. He had no signs of life. The Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the scene. After they completed their investigation, Fire-Rescue crews used Holmatro Rescue Tools to remove the driver’s side door, cut away several pieces of debris and a hydraulic ram to displace the dash and floor. A small canine was discovered alive in the floor board of the truck. He was placed in a nearby fire truck until animal control could arrived and take custody of the animal. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 1, Medic 1, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 110 responded. Battalion Chief Ben Heape served as Incident Commander.
