17/November/2013 – MVC with Fire – “B” Shift

Incident # 13-06279 - A 21 year old man received multiple traumatic injuries in a single car MVC on Tuskegee Airman Drive at Purple Heart Drive Sunday afternoon 17-November at 13:19. The 2014 Honda Crosstour, left the roadway then struck a tree. The car received heavy damage and was smoking. Another motorist, Ernest (Bubba) Smyly drove up on the accident and stopped to assist. Mr. Smyly and another man we able to open the driver’s door and pull the semi-conscious driver out of the smoking car. Firefighter-Paramedics from Station 19 two blocks away arrived shortly thereafter. While Paramedics were beginning their evaluation of the patient, the car burst into flames. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. The patient suffered multiple life threatening injuries. A medical helicopter was contacted to respond to the Lowcountry Regional Airport. The man was immobilized and treated at the scene, then transported to the airport to meet with the medical helicopter. However, due to poor weather conditions, the helicopter had to abort the flight before they arrived. Fire-Rescue then transported the man directly to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

 
Engine 19, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Firefighter-EMT Bryon Martinson served as Incident Commander.
