10/August/2013 – Fatal MVC – “A” Shif

Incident # 13-4367 - A 41 year old Walterboro man was killed after being struck by a car in the 3000 block of Cottageville Highway (US Hwy 17-A) Saturday morning 10-August. The incident was reported at 04:30. Witness statements vary about the circumstances surrounding the man being in the roadway. There are no street lights on the rural section of road.  The accident occurred just before a curve near the Circle M Ranch between Phillips Road and Coolers Dairy Road. Several other individuals were on scene with a disabled vehicle when the man was struck.

Engine 19 and Medic 19 arrived to find the man lying in the center of the dark highway. He suffered multiple traumatic injuries and had no signs of life. The Coroner’s Office was notified and responded. The SC Highway Patrol also brought in MAIT who conducted an investigation as well. Cottageville Highway at the accident site was closed for four and half hours until MAIT and the Coroner’s Office completed their field investigations. Sheriff’s Deputies rerouted traffic. Fire-Rescue units remained on the scene providing lighting for Law Enforcement Officers. The Coroner’s Office transported the man’s body to MUSC.   

Engine 19, Medic 19, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 118 responded. Firefighter-EMT Shane Weber served as Incident Commander.
