20/January/2013 – Shooting Incident – “A” Shift

Incident # 13-00369 – A 20 year old man was critically injured in what witnesses reported as an accidental shooting at 200 State Street. The incident was reported at 14:36 and occurred three blocks from Colleton Medical Center. Walterboro Public Safety and Battalion 1 were on the scene within four minutes and Medic 6 responded from the ED. The man was struck in the upper chest at near point blank range by a shotgun blast. The man’s girlfriend acted quickly and controlled the heavy bleeding before Responders arrived. Firefighter-Paramedics quickly treated the man at the scene, notified the ED and were off the scene within five minutes. Medic 19 and Rescue 1 assisted. The man was transported to Colleton Medical Center where he was stabilized, then flown by LifeNet 4 to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. He went directly to surgery and remains in critical condition. Walterboro Public Safety is investigating the incident.

Medic 6, Medic 19, Rescue 1 and Battalion 1 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
