Incident # 12-06711 - A Virginia woman and her dog were severely injured after their Toyota Land Cruiser overturned on Interstate 95 near the 46 mile marker Tuesday afternoon 11-December at 14:29. The small SUV appears to have drifted off of the left shoulder, then overcorrected causing the vehicle to cross both lanes of traffic. The car flipped over at least once before knocking down a large highway sign, then striking a tree. The car suffered heavy damage. The female driver received multiple serious injuries. Bystanders removed her and the dog from the car. The 7 year old Golden Retriever also suffered multiply traumatic injuries including a spinal injury. Firefighter-Paramedics treated the woman and the dog. The female was transported to Colleton Medical Center where she was later admitted to the ICU. Other crewmembers continued to attend to the canine until Animal Control Officers arrived. The dog was placed on a litter and loaded into an Animal Control vehicle. Firefighter-Paramedics attended to the canine during transport to Doctor Lorie Campbell’s Animal Clinic in Walterboro.

Doctor Campbell and her staff quickly accessed the dog and began life saving treatment. It was determined the animal had broken her back in the crash, as well as other injuries. The animal remained in their care over night and will remain there until the owner can be released from the hospital. They have been in contact with the owner. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 1, Medic 1, Car 12 and Car 105 responded. Deputy Chief David Greene served as Incident Commander.
