05/26/2012 – Fatal MVC with entrapment – “B” Shift

Incident # 12-02811 - A 26 year old Walterboro man lost his life in a single car high speed MVC on Green Pond Hwy (SC Hwy 303) approximately one mile north of Ritter Crossroads Saturday afternoon at 16:08. The 1988 Ford Mustang was traveling south on Green Pond Highway when it left the roadway, struck a culvert pipe and became airborne. The car completely jumped a wooden rail fence, traveled 107 feet through the air, before landing in a grass field and over-turning several times. The car received massive damage, trapping the unrestrained driver in the wreckage. Fire-Rescue units arrived five minutes later to find the driver was deceased. The Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the scene. Once they completed their investigation, Firefighter-Paramedics used Holmatro extrication tools to remove the passenger side door and roof to free the driver. He was transported to the morgue by the Coroner’s Office. Medic 19 responded to treat and transport a hysterical family member to Colleton Medical Center. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 6, Medic 6, Medic 1, Medic 19, Rescue 1, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Ben Heape served as Incident Commander.
