10/24/2011 – MVC/MCI with ejections – “C” Shift

Incident # 11-05711 – At 15:53 Monday 24-October, Fire-Rescue received a mutual aid request from Hampton County for two ambulances to assist with a MCI on I-95 at the 37 mile marker southbound. Hampton County EMS was already on the scene with three ambulances and one ambulance from Jasper County Fire-Rescue. Apparently a southbound full sized van left the roadway, over-corrected and flipped over at least two times, ejecting several occupants. A total of twelve patients were injured including two children. No one received any life threatening injuries, however several patients were treated for fractures. Units and personnel from the Town of Yemassee and Sheldon Fire Departments also responded. Crews immobilized the many injured, with Jasper County Fire-Rescue transporting two patients to Hampton Regional Hospital. Two Hampton EMS ambulances and Two Colleton County Fire-Rescue Ambulances transported the remaining ten patients to Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. Colleton Medical Center already had a full ER, so they called in extra personnel to handle the sudden influx of injured people.

The ED staff was well prepared even with the short notice from the Paramedics in the field. The rural section of southbound I-95 was backed up at a standstill for 14 miles. An earlier accident at the 48 mile marker southbound involving an over-turned camper, greatly contributed to the traffic backup.

Colleton County Medic 1, Medic 6, Car 12 and Car 118 responded. Three Hampton County Ambulances, One Jasper County Ambulance. Two Yemassee Engines and a Yemassee Rescue responded.
