08/15/2011 – MVC w/Ejects & Air Evacuation – “B” Shift

Incident # 11-04460 – A single vehicle accident has left one man in critical condition and injured three others. The accident occurred in the 2800 block of Cottageville Highway (US Hwy 17-A) north of Phillips Road at 22:43, Monday evening 15-August. A southbound Ford Pickup truck, pulling a trailer lost control in a curve, over-corrected and went off of the right hand shoulder. The truck went down a small embankment and over-turned four times ejecting two adult males. Both men were found approximately eight feet from where the truck came to rest. Two small children, ages 2 and 3 received minor injuries in the crash. It was unknown if the children were also ejected. Neither was restrained in a child safety seat. Both men suffered multiple traumatic injuries, one with suspected internal injuries. His condition was poor at the scene and deteriorated rapidly after he was placed in an ambulance. A medical helicopter was requested to fly him to a Trauma Center. Medic 1 was assigned to the incident to treat and transport the other man and the children. Medic 1 transported them to Colleton Medical Center. The children were treated and released to relatives about a hour later.

Medic 19 packaged the critically injured man, then transported him to the Lowcountry Regional Airport to meet with the Med-Trans Helicopter. Engine 1 established a LZ near the terminal building. The patient was flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Engine 1, Engine 19, Medic 1, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Firefighter-EMT-I James Varnadoe served as Incident Commander. Firefighter-Paramedic Steven Scurry was LZ Coordinator.
