Colleton County Fire-Rescue

4/23/2010

Stations 1, 5, 17, 18, 19, 26, and 27 responded to a two alarm structure fire at 719 Quail Drive at 1221, Friday afternoon 23-April. Quail Drive is currently closed in the 600 block due to bridge construction. The construction crew notified 9-1-1 that they could see smoke and flames coming from a house near their location. Engine 1 arrived five minutes later to find heavy fire conditions from the B side of the double wide mobile home and heavy smoke conditions throughout the structure. Engine 1 laid a 5 inch supply line from a hydrant at the corner of Quail Drive and Partridge Trail. Firefighters stretched two 1-3/4 handlines to the building and a 2-1/2 Blitz line to the rear of the structure. Crews laddered the “D” side of the building to perform ventilation. Interior crews were pulled out of the building as fire advanced under the structure and throughout the attic space. Firefighters performed a defensive attack for about 20 minutes before they could re-enter the structure. A second alarm was issued at approximately 1240 for additional manpower.

CAFS Engine 26 was positioned at the rear of the building, deploying one 1-3/4 CAFS line. The CAFS line was used primarily in the attic space as crews pulled the ceiling in multiple locations on the “D” side to reach the fire. Firefighters had the fire under control within 35 minutes, but were on the scene for 4 hours.  Some important valuables were saved. The fire appears to have originated in the area of the kitchen which was located on the “BC” corner. A passenger car parked behind the home was also damaged.

Engine 1, Engine 19, Engine 26, Tender 5, Tender 17, Tender 18, Tender 19, Tender 27, Medic 19, Medic 27, Battalion 1, Car 16 and Car 111 responded. Lieutenant Joey Campbell served as Incident Commander.
