23/January/2015 – Multi-vehicle MVC – “B” Shift

Incident # 15-00447 – Three people were injured and southbound traffic was brought to a standstill Friday afternoon 23-January following a five vehicle chain reaction accident on I-95 at the Exit 57 overpass. According to bystanders, a car collided with a tractor trailer in heavy rains, which resulted in a motor home impacting the rear of the tractor trailer. A vehicle being towed by the motor home dislodged and the motor home was struck by another southbound car. The southbound lanes of the Interstate were blocked causing traffic to back up several miles. Bells Highway traffic was also backed up, due to cars wishing to enter the south bound lanes could not move on the entrance ramp. Engine 26 worked their way through the traffic and found the three injured people. A second ambulance was requested. The SC Highway Patrol, Sheriff’s Office and Walterboro Police worked together to detour traffic in the heavy rains. One lane of I-95 was opened after approximately 30 minutes. Two of the injured people were transported to Colleton Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The third injured party denied ambulance transportation. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 26, Medic 1, Medic 26, Battalion 1 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
