30/December/2013 – Structure Fire – “C” Shift 

A third vacant home in the Hampton Drive Subdivision was heavily damaged in a suspicious fire Monday evening 30-December. At 20:52, Fire-Rescue was notified of the fire in a vacant residence at 205 Poplar Street. The fire was discovered much earlier than the previous two incidents in the neighborhood. We offer condolences to Firefighter-Paramedic Thomas Keefer and his family. His mother-in-law Isabell “Izzie” Crosby passed away last week. The funeral was conducted at Koger Mortuary in Walterboro Saturday 28-December at 17:30. Please remember them in your prayers.

28/December/2013 – Structure Fire – “A” Shift

A Rentz Drive home was heavily damaged by a mid-day fire Saturday, 28-December. At 14:18, Fire-Rescue was notified of smoke coming from the attic of a home at 355 Rentz Drive near the rural Hudson Mill Community. Engine 1 arrived six minutes later to find flames across the roof of the one story residential dwelling. Click here for more information.

27/December/2013 – Structure Fire – “B” Shift

While units were still on the scene of a structure fire on Poplar Street, Fire-Rescue was dispatched to a second structure fire one block away at 301 Edgewood Street. Firefighters at the Poplar Street incident were still performing overhaul and breaking down lines when the fire was dispatched. Click here for more information.

27/December/2013 – Structure Fire – “B” Shift

A Poplar Street home was destroyed in an early morning fire Friday 27-December. At 02:55, Fire-Rescue was notified of the house with flames coming out of the windows. Engine 19 arrived minutes later to find the single story wood frame residential dwelling fully involved, with flames 40 feet in the air. Click here for more information.

22/December/2013 – Fatal High Speed MVC with two Air Evacs – “A” Shift

A high speed head-on collision near New Hope Crossroads in Islandton Sunday morning has left two Varnville residents with injuries and one man deceased. The accident occurred at 11:30 on 22-December in front of 13792 Sniders Highway. A west bound Chevrolet Impala crossed the center line and struck an eastbound Nissan X-Terra head-on. 21/December/2013 – Structure Fire – “B” Shift

At 10:12 Friday morning 20-December, Fire-Rescue was notified of a mobile home on fire at 111 Monarch Lane in the Jacksboro Community. Engine 2 arrived to find the singlewide mobile home fully involved. Firefighters deployed one 2-1/2” handline to knock down most of the fire, then one 1-3/4” handline to finish extinguishing the burning remains of the trailer. Click here for more information.

18/December/2013 – MVC with Entrapment – “C” Shift

Three people were injured, one critically in a two vehicle collision on Sniders Highway near Acorn Road Wednesday morning 18-December. At 11:52 a Chrysler Concorde pulled into the path of an eastbound tractor trailer. The empty log truck struck the car in the passenger side doors causing heavy damage and trapping two of the occupants.  Click here for more information.

18/December/2013 – Station 35 Opens

Station 35, located at 5278 Round O Road, was placed into service this week. The station will served the area between Cottageville and Jacksonboro. It was placed at Ions Crossroads, which was the ideal response location for the community. The two bay station will house Engine 35 and Tender 35 and bring Class four Insurance to the residents of the area.  Click here for more information.

17/December/2013 – Structure Fires – “A” and “B” shifts

A fire which started in the area of a heater caused moderate damage to a dwelling at 433 Academy Road, Tuesday morning 17-December at 04:33. Engine 19 arrived to find moderate smoke coming from the eves of the two story home. The homeowner had used a garden hose to extinguish some of the fire. Firefighters deployed an 1-3/4 handline and found fire in a closet containing the heater. Click here for more information.

16/December/2013 – MVC w/entrapment & Air Evac x 2

A two vehicle collision left two people critically injured Monday evening 16-December at 18:42. The accident occurred when a loaded log truck attempted to cross ACE Basin Parkway (US Highway 17) at Wood Road. A southbound Jeep Cherokee tried to avoid the large truck, but collided at a high rate of speed, striking the rear tandem wheels on the trailer. Click here for more information.

16-December-2013 – Station 3/23 Christmas Dinner and Awards            

Stations 3 and 23 held their annual Christmas Dinner at Rizer’s Pork and Produce on Confederate Highway in Lodge, Monday evening 16-December. Firefighter / EMT Jeff Laney was recognized for his exemplary dedication and continued impeccable service to both Stations. In addition he was recognized for his attention to detail and his professional attitude and appearance.   Click here for more information.

15/December/2013 – MVC w/ejection & Air Evac – “C” Shift 

A high speed MVC resulted in three people being injured. The accident occurred on Sniders Highway east of Mears Road, Sunday evening 15-December at 21:55. The westbound Chevrolet S-10 Blazer left the roadway, then over-turned possibly five times, ejecting two of the occupants. A third person in the car stated he was wearing a seatbelt. 14/December/2013 – Shop with Santa’s Heroes

Seven members of Fire-Rescue participated with over twenty other emergency responders and Colleton County DSS to bring a brighter Christmas to needy children in our community. The annual event is sponsored by Walterboro Public Safety who spearheads the collection of donations to purchase the gifts for the children. Click here for more information. 

10/December/2013 – Shooting Incidents – “A” Shift

Two possibly related, but separate shooting incidents injured several people Tuesday afternoon 10-December. The first incident was reported at 13:37 in the 300 block of Green Pond Hwy after a reported white vehicle shot at several people in the front yard of the residence. Click here for more information.

10/December/2013 – Auto Pedestrian MVC – “C” Shift

A six year old boy received multiple traumatic injuries after he was run over by a pickup truck in the 3500 block of Bells Highway, Tuesday morning 10-December at 07:07. Witnesses advised the child ran into the path of the west bound S-10 Pickup. After being struck, the child went completely under the vehicle, coming out from the rear of the truck. 08/December/2013 – Christmas Parade

Fire-Rescue participated in the Walterboro Christmas Parade Sunday evening, 08-December. The parade was held at night and traveled a route beginning in front of the Colleton Center, traveling west on Hampton to Jefferies Blvd, then making a U-turn to travel east through the Downtown Business District on Washington Street. 04/December/2013 – MVC with Extrication – “A” Shift 

An adult male received non-life threatening injuries when his car collided with a pickup truck in the 1200 block of Adnah Church Road 04-December at 15:29. Both side doors on the small station wagon were damaged and would not open. Due to the patient’s position and injuries, Firefighters used Holmatro Rescue Tools to remove the driver’s door to extricate the man. Click here for more information.

01/December/2013 – Structure Fire – “A” Shift

Firefighters saved a Live Oak Street home after a passerby reported flames coming from the structure at 21:53, Sunday evening 01-December. Fire-Rescue arrived to find heavy fire conditions with flames through the roof on the “D” side of the structure. Firefighters deployed two 1-3/4 handlines and forced entry through the front door. 01/December/2013 – Structure Fire – “A” Shift

An Ulmer Lake Road home received moderate damage from a fire that occurred in the living room Sunday afternoon 01-December. Alert neighbors spotted smoke and flames coming from the home and called 9-1-1 at 17:57. Engine 1 arrived to find heavy smoke conditions with fire venting from a window on the east side of the residence. Click here for more information.
