Colleton County Fire-Rescue

5/22/2010

Stations 1, 2 and 6 responded to a single car MVC on ACE Basin Parkway north of Balchem Lane at 1448 Saturday afternoon 22-May. A northbound Volvo station wagon left the roadway in heavy rains, struck several trees and overturned. It was initially reported that the driver was trapped in the wreckage. Medic 6 and Engine 2 arrived to find the vehicle on its side in the woods. Visibility was very low due to heavy rain. The 32 year old female driver apparently was not wearing a seatbelt. She suffered multiple traumatic injuries in the crash and was in critical condition. Firefighter-Paramedics extricated the woman and treated her briefly at the scene in Medic 6. No medical helicopters could fly due to poor weather. Medic 6 transported the patient directly to MUSC. The patient’s condition deteriorated enroute to the Trauma Center and a Charleston County EMS unit met with Medic 6 near Ravanel to assist with the patient care. One small child and an infant were also in the vehicle but were restrained in child safety seats. They were not injured.

Engine 2, Medic 6, Rescue 1, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Fire Commissioner SG Drew served as Incident Commander.
